How to Turn Your Home into a Luxury Hotel

Updated: Dec 6

Most people dream of vacations when they want to escape the trials and tribulations of daily life. A quiet getaway filled with feathery pillows and a focus on comfort. There is something so appealing about a luxury hotel, complete with all the upgrades and amenities one can dream of. At least, that's what I used to think. There is something to be said about the comfort of one’s own home. For me, the quote “there’s no place like home” really resonates with me. I arrive in a hotel room only to think of the ways in which my space at home is better. A house should be a sanctuary, with each room its own unique getaway, serving the purposes you need it to. Today, I can proudly say I have achieved that. And you can too, here’s how.

Jump Into a New World

The way you sleep informs your entire day. If someone sleeps fitfully, statistics say they are bound to have a day that is less than enjoyable. Therefore, we start with the bed. Investing in the components of your bed is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself, and frankly, those around you as well. This includes the mattress, pillows, duvet, and linens. Yes, thread count and material composition do make a difference. Honestly, this can be an entire post in itself. I say investing, and I don't say it lightly. It can run a pretty penny. But boy is it worth it. A bed is a haven, and it should be treated as such. Some of my favorite brands to source linen are Parachute, Frette, Hotel Collection, and Everlasting.

Dim the Lights

One thing you won't often see in hotels are recessed spotlights. To set the tone of relaxation, add some accent and task lighting to your space. Specialty lighting like this is not conducive for every daily task, but when you need that “escape” lighting plays an important role.

Bring on in the Textural Play

One thing about hotels is that they don't shy away from textures. Tweeds, velvets, and linens are just some of the plethora of fabrics that appear throughout a hotel suite. That is not even beginning to speak about patterns, another prevalent aspect of design in hotels. Pillows are the easiest way to bring in these textures, but can also extend to throws, drapes, and large upholstery pieces.

Upgrade Your Toiletries

Often overlooked, toiletries play an integral role in the perception of one’s surroundings. Think about what scents and body-care routines put your mind and muscles at ease. Though this isn’t particularly design-based, it certainly aids in creating a luxury atmosphere. Scents are one of the first things recognized in a space and are very influential in mind-body association. Plus, upgraded toiletries do look phenomenal on a vanity or in a shower. If you don’t know where to start I’d start with Molton Brown, Aesop, Necessaire, and Cyklar.

Become Your Own Barista

Earlier, I briefly mentioned the bountiful amount of amenities available in a hotel. Coffee stations are present in any hotel suite and lobby, allowing guests a moment to stop and revel in a hot cup of deliciousness. Bring it home! Set up a coffee station, fill it with your favorite flavors, and syrups, along with a few cute mugs and boom. A spot to take a minute and reset. And if you drink tea, make it a tea station! Whatever your prerogative is, set up a little treat station for yourself to make the small moments throughout your day and routines that much more enjoyable.

An Entrance to Luxury

Think of the entry to your home as a hotel lobby. What aura and energy is released when you walk in the front door? Since this is the first space you see when you walk in, you probably want to think about what you place in the room to set the tone. Perhaps a console with some fresh flowers, a plush bench, or some large format artwork to elevate the space. Whatever speaks loudest to you.

Include Accessories, Service Accessories

One of the greatest aspects of hotels is the small touches that make the stay that much more enjoyable. Think about what accessories you can implement in your space that will work for you. Some ideas to think about are a bedside carafe, a luxury robe, and placing some small snacks around your house.
